Lamictal Update... 3 Months, 1 Week ago

Today is day 27 for me taking Lamictal. I am in the process of weening off of Depakote. Since I am still on Depakote, I have to go up in dose of Lamictal even slower than usual since Depakote doubles the amount of Lamictal in your system.
I'm not sure, but I think that the Lamictal may be paying off. Either that or I am hypomanic. I'm really not sure. Yesterday was a good day for me as I was not depressed at all for the first time in about a month or more. Today I have had some depression, but maybe the Lamictal is just starting to work and as I go off of Depakote and my dose of Lamictal increases then maybe I'll have better days to look forward to. There still remains the possibility that I was just hypo.
For me, I think that once the Depakote arrested the mania it began to depress me, too. Hopefully that will change. Tomorrow I go down to 500mg. I had gone down to 1000mg for a week, tomorrow I start 500mg for a week, and then end at 250mg for a week. As this takes place my Lamictal dose is heading towards 150mg and then I will see my pdoc to see where things stand. Hopefully the Lamictal will continue to not be overly bothersome to me.

I was just put on Lamictal today actually, and am having to do the same thing you have done with my Depakote dose. Its currently at 1500mg Depakote (down from 2000). He wants to keep me at 1500mg for the time being, as I slowly go up in dose for the Lamictal. He said that i might end up not even needing the Depakote in the end. So far I'm only taking 1/2 of a 25mg Lamictal. It sounds like we're both going through the same kinda thing.

I have now been on Lamictal for about 11 weeks. I am up to 250mg and I am pretty sure that is where I will remain. I've been off Depakote ER for over 8 weeks and have lost 12 of the 14 pounds that I gained on it. The Lamictal has worked wonders for me. It has helped both the depression and the mania. I now smile more, laugh more, sleep again, dwell on things less, no more racing thoughts, and in general I feel so much better and very stable. Over the past 12 years I have taken almost all the meds out there for bp and Lamictal is by far the best and more importantly it is the only one so far that has actually helped me achieve stability. The side effects for me are few and tolerable - some tiredness, sometimes it is hard to yawn, and I had minor nausea for a couple of weeks. In the beginning I had some muscle stiffness especially in the neck, but that is gone now. If I could meet with the developers of Lamictal, I would give them all a big hug if they allowed me to of course.

I have just started lamictal 5 days ago 12,5 mg.I am also taking depakote too.I have been suicidally depressed for more than a month and after that I am now rapidly cycling wihtin a day for how many days I have not figured out but it is very exhausting me,sometimes making me lose hope and I now began to feel mixed mood. But I stand and wait. After hearing from you all that lamictal really helps , I now hope I won't have any side effects and have lamictal stopped,I had some rash before so this time it will take about 2 months to reach 100 mgs of lamictal dose, ounce by ounce. It feels like a very long time, but I am tryng to keep the angels on my mind... ie: stay c a l m and wait.

I am still taking Lamictal. I still like Lamictal, but over time had to drop from 250mg all the way down 100mg. I was having a lot of shortness of breath. 100mg definitely keeps the depression in check but isn't enough for the hypo/mania so after unsuccessfully trying Abilify(hyperglycemia(I have type 1 diabetes) and severe fluid retention) to keep the hypo at bay, we decided to add Trileptal. Trileptal is basically an old drug called Tegretol with an oxygen attached to it. That oxygen makes a huge difference in the bad side-effects. Trileptal is not FDA approved to treat bp in the US, but it is in Europe for a long time and it IS used here as well off-label. I just started it so I am hopeful that it will aid the Lamictal on the hypo/manic side. Trileptal does not have as much oomph as Tegretol in treating bp by itself, so usually it is added to something else - in my case Lamictal. Trileptal is considered weight neutral. In one week I lost the 6lbs of water weight that I had gained on Abilify. I was hardly urinating at all while on Abilify so all that water added up quickly. Here's to Lamictal for depression and hopefully its limited anti-mania effects will be bolstered by Trileptal.
